Bad news from the front of the war against eighties clothing. Dave the Lunabomber sends this picture from the King of Prussia Abercrombie and Fitch.
In other news, Keeny D reports three Fourth of July mesh shirt sightings on the Ben Franklin Parkway. Things are heating up. Though these developments are daunting, we must not be intimidated by the enemies of good taste. Stand firm, and keep on fighting that good fight.
It looks like the world is beginning to notice the flipped collar comeback. Well…the small world that I am surrounded by anyway.
The heated discussion continues
P.S. I am in no way affiliated with UPenn.
Sam, that link is hysterical! I had no idea that collar-flipping originated as a way to keep the sun off your neck.
For the record, Good Grief! does not condone the violent anti-flipping tactics advocated on that forum. This is a peaceful weblog.
I tried going straight to the source to get to the bottom of this phenomenon, but, alas, I didn’t learn as much as I’d hoped. There’s a history of the polo shirt but no history of the flipped collar.
And I don’t want to call this disturbing, but…well, I don’t know how to end this sentence.
What about the sweater knotted around the neck (almost invariably over a polo shirt)? I don’t know if that look ever went out, but I’m noticing it with alarming frequency these days, especially on women. It’s like a “Facts of Life” reunion tour.
Check out DCA with the hyperlinks!

Dang, too bad we didn’t have the internet in the eighties!
Okay, I think I can handle the flipped collar. After all it looks cute on younger people. My mom always told me that if a style comes back around and you wore it the first time, you’re too old! I can take the flipped collar, but if the tuck and roll on the pant legs comes back, it would be very scary!
Becky/DCA-Those links are brutal. My eyes! My eyes! Ohhhhh….the Humanity.
Sorry ’bout that Dave! DCA just learned how to make hyperlinks, and the whole thing got out of control. I hope your eyes have recovered.
