Good news: SpongeBob Squarepants soundtrack

Spongebob
Last week, Stereogum posted two mp3s from the soundtrack of the forthcoming SpongeBob Squarepants Movie.  I’ve never seen SpongeBob Squarepants and had not heard of the movie, but these songs are charming (a complete track listing is here):

  • The Shins: They’ll Discover Soon
  • The Flaming Lips: SpongeBob and Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall of Energy

The movie is rated PG for “some mild crude humor,” but the trailers are work safe.  Other contributers to the soundtrack include Wilco, Avril Lavigne, Electrocute, Motorhead, and Plus Tech Squeezebox.

Remarked The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, “SpongeBob is the mutant offspring of The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine without the acid-hippie damage. Having spent most of my youth working at a fast-food fish joint, I can totally relate, without any irony, to the nobility of SpongeBob’s dream to someday be the restaurant manager.”

Comments Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, “I fell in love with SpongeBob when I heard him describe the darkness at the bottom of the sea as ‘advanced darkness.’ Besides, how could I not write a song for the movie? It automatically makes me the coolest dad on the block.”

I might have to see the SpongeBob flick, even though I’ve just barely recovered from the humiliation of seeing the Powerpuff Girls sans kid.

Yes, yes he does. I love singing the theme song, but then again I am a little ‘off.’
